Swan's Island resident and current property owner, Ann Marie Maguire states the original owners had a large apple orchard. "I remember an old apple tree that had "walked" down the hill behind the house," she said. "It would grow old, die and fall over, and then a branch would grow roots from contact with the ground, and the cycle would resume. "You could trace it happening 3 or 4 times, and this may give some idea of the age of the orchard. It may go back to the late 1700's."
This red house in Whitefield, Maine sits on a knoll overlooking rolling fields in what was once known as Ball Town, Maine. The house (and county) are over two hundred years old. An interesting story on "Mainething.com" written by Ann Marie Maguire tells more about the house. As caretaker, I am interested in learning what life was like for those who lived here over the many years. Through this blog I hope others will appreciate its historical aspects and aesthetics.
